- This Mental Health Center website has been built by a qualified counselor. I hold a Masters in Counseling from Wright State University (Dayton, Ohio), plus a 2 other post graduate degrees, which while not specifically majors in psychology, they had components of psychology and counseling as part of their required course work
I have worked in both private practice and in the public health arena. The latter included managing a mental health team providing a spectrum of services in a rural region including family needs, suicide prevention, anger management, mood disorders, plus more serious issues such as schizoaffective disorders and related treatments.
A particular focus or emphasis I have pursued has been to encourage people to see themselves as ‘normal’ despite the presence of mild or even serious symptoms of mental disorders. Of course the ‘stigma’ of mental illness makes this difficult for clients, but as much as possible, I encourage people to see this as a problem ‘others’ have – It is not a patient’s problem.
Normalizing mental health concerns is not easy in a society that readily stigmatizes those who ‘appear’ different – be it physical, sexual, cultural, spiritual or mental. However, we must persist in breaking down barriers of intolerance and ignorance.
There is no one who does not suffer from some form of deleterious affects on their psyche during their life span – even if it’s mild (e.g. hurt feelings) or major (e.g. marriage breakdown, rejection etc).
Many people use illicit drugs or alcohol to deal with their negative ‘feelings’ – but do not classify this as mental health – which of course it is – our emotions are a critical element in well being.
