Some Good Books To Read

Posted by: affiliatesolutions | January 29, 2012 | No Comment |

Whether you are sheltering from winters cold by the fire or laying on a beach in summer there are always some good books to read that can make your leisure more enjoyable.

Daughters of Rome by Kate Quinn
This sweeping, powerful epic tells the story of one of the bloodiest years in Rome’s history through the eyes of two remarkable women fighting for survival.A.D. 69. The Roman Empire is up for the taking. The Year of the Four Emperors will change everything – especially the lives of two sisters with a very personal stake in the outcome.

No One Left To Tell by Karen Rose
A woman is dead and her fianc is serving a life sentence for a murder he didn’t commit. Now PI Paige Holden holds the only piece of evidence that could see him freed, and she cannot take it to the police. With the help of disarming state attorney, Grayson Smith, Paige is determined to avenge the murdered woman and set an innocent man free

Worth Dying For by Lee Child
61 Hours ended with maverick loner Jack Reacher trapped in a desperate situation from which escape seemed impossible. Even for him. But Reacher has done the impossible before. Now there’s deadly trouble in the wilds of Nebraska.and Reacher walks right into it.

Fall Of Giants by Ken Follett
This is a huge novel that follows five families through the world-shaking dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for votes for women. It is 1911

Of course you ought to get into anything by

  • Robert Crais
  • John Lescroart
  • Michael Connelly
  • James Grippando
  • James Lee Burke
  • Sharon Kay Penman
  • Colleen McCullough

I wouldn’t bother with Clive Cussler or James Patterson as they are just churned out novels with heaps of contrivance and little substance anymore.

Posted by: affiliatesolutions | December 29, 2011 | No Comment |

Well good holiday reading 2012 may only apply to the southern hemisphere where it is summer and folks take breaks – but whatever! A good read will always have time set aside for it!

I have just put Robert B Parker (author of the Spenser novels) onto my featured authors page on my website. As I explained there – this is an author I neglected – and shouldn’t have!

I have also put in a new page called Borrow Books and Movies as a service to my readers who are looking for inexpensive ways of accessing great deals for books, music and movies.

Crime Thrillers With A Difference

Posted by: affiliatesolutions | November 16, 2011 | No Comment |

Being a lover of crime mysteries and police procedurals, I am always open to crime thrillers with a difference.

Recently I came across two that filled the bill – both were set in Asia, with (obviously) Asian protagonists. One was set in modern China and the other in 17th century Japan during the Shogunate regime.

The first was “The Eye of Jade” by Diane Wei Liang – a first novel.  The main character is Mei Wang who has just started as a private detective and been commissioned to find the “Eye Of Jade”.

It has interesting insights into both Mao’s China and the China of the post Mao period – all of which adds extra interest – and a difference.

The other one was “The Perfumed Sleeve” – by Laura Joh Rowland.  A murder has to be solved, and it being Shogunate Japan, if the Shogun’s investigator San Ichiro does not succeed, he could lose his life.  It is set amidst the rivalry of two powerful men who are seeking supreme power behind the ineffectual Shogun. Both of the latter have an interest in having their opposite number found guilty and Sano is constantly working on a tightwire of neutrality.

The insights into the Japan of the period make this an interesting read, as well as a good yarn with characters we are interested in and care about.

E-Readers, iPads, Kindle Fire

Posted by: affiliatesolutions | September 30, 2011 | No Comment |

With the release of Amazon’s new reader the KINDLE FIRE, customers have a wider selection of devices to choose from – and not limited to iPad and the older Kindle device.

Multipurpose e-book readers
This type, which include such tablet computers as the Apple iPad, typically offer a color screen, supplemented on a few models by a second, monochromatic E Ink screen. They usually also have a full Web browser, where as dedicated readers may have none, or only a limited one.

A tablet can be defined as a tablet computer having the main characteristics of a personal computer, as a machine operated by an end-user with no intervening computer operator. A portable tablet PC is equipped with a touchscreen as a primary input device. The tablet form factor is typically smaller than a notebook computer but larger than a smart phone.

Software applications for tablet PCs include office suites, web browsers, games and a variety of applications. It also includes a Wireless interface. Several types of tablets are available in the market. They are
Aple’s iPad (9.7 inches)
Asus Eee EP121 (has a 12 inch screen!)
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Screen sizes vary – I prefer the 12 inch – but that is an individual choice.

The Kindle Fire (7 inches) falls in between
Kindle Fire, Full Color 7″ Multi-touch Display, Wi-Fi

These are basic – with e-ink screens
Barnes & Noble Nook
Sony Readers

My Top Ten Fiction Books

Posted by: affiliatesolutions | September 23, 2011 | No Comment |

Ever since I started my personal website Top Fiction Books, I have wondered if the  lists that come out at years end about the top ten fiction novels and authors the article writer opinion or genuinely  reflective of good research/surveys of ordinary readers.

I have my own top ten list of what I consider are the best novels – but it is purely subjective and based not so much on academic criteria, but on my own feelings and enjoyment.

What are your favorite books or authors?

I would love to have lists from you my visitors – so please consider and send to me your list – with a short comment on each as to why it is your choice.

I will publish here – with acknowledgements – and also make a list for my book website.

The only criteria you need is that it gave you satisfaction – there is no need for academic or technical explanations.

I find many of the books nominated for the Nobel Prize or the Booker (UK) are almost unreadable or mind-numbingly boring.  Like many high valued paintings that are sold for millions, they are subject to what I consider the spurious prentensions of those who love fads and have absolutley no idea of what is real or what real people appreciate.  The classic example of art that fits this is Andy Warhols works – art – my foot!  Oh well!

If you would like to submit a list contact me via the contact page on my website and I will reply within 24 hours – with an email address.

Peter James – Great Crime Novelist

Posted by: affiliatesolutions | September 18, 2011 | No Comment |

Peter James is one of the UK’s most treasured crime and thriller novelists.

His Roy Grace detective novels have sold over one and a half million in the UK alone and five and a half million worldwide in total. The series is now translated into 34 languages.

He has developed a close working relationship with the Sussex Police over many years, spending an average of one day a week with them and his writing reveals a unique insight into the reality of modern day police work.

Not that well known in the States his books have been recently promoted there in an attempt to get a wider audience.

Immediately hailed in coast-to-coast reviews, his novel “Dead Like You” was singled out for “The Must List” by Entertainment Weekly, and received this superlative praise from Patrick Anderson of the Washington Post: “…a remarkably inventive story of sexual obsession, possibly the most engrossing thriller since Thomas Harris’s ‘The Silence of the Lambs.’”

The paperback edition of Dead Like You will be released by Minotaur Books in September, 2011.

See more about this novelist at my website Top Fiction Books  He is worth your time.

Go to my Amazon Bookstore on the site and use any link there to get to Amazon proper – simply enter Peter James in the search and “Bob’s your uncle!”  Their prices are excellent
